How a gift reaches the game
Four stops, in under a second.

STEP BY STEP
Getting started
Everything happens from the game's status bar, at the bottom of the app.

Download the runtime
In the bar below press «Download runtime». It downloads once and the app keeps it in its own folder.

Choose your ROM
Press «Choose ROM» and pick your .z64, .n64 or .v64 file (if it's in a .zip or .7z, extract it first). The app checks it is the US one; if not, the step turns red and tells you why.
The exact list of versions that work and don't is behind the help icon in the bar below.

Enable the connection
Press «Enable connection» with the game closed: the app downloads what the game needs to receive effects and puts it in place.

Press «Launch game»
The first time, the game reads your ROM and builds its files in a few seconds. It asks nothing: don't close the window meanwhile. After that it starts straight away and the ROM is no longer needed.
Before that first launch the app shows you these steps in a window.

Start a race once «Connected»
When the bar below shows «Connected», press Start (Space) on the title screen and pick mode, engine class, driver and cup with A (X). Mario GP is the fullest mode. Effects land during the race.

Choose what each gift does
In «Profiles» create an example one in a click or build your own: each gift, follow or chat command fires the effect you pick.
EFFECTS
What your chat can do
Each effect is assigned to a gift, a follow, likes or a chat command.
Against you
Shrinking lightning, spin-out, squish, shell hit, locked controls, forced steering left or right, slowdown and a 180° spin to face backward.
Against the rivals
The same hits on every CPU driver at once: spin-outs, lightning, squishes, forced steering, slowdowns and 180° spins.
IMPORTANT
Before you go live
Only the original US ROM
The European and Japanese versions, fan translations and romhacks can't be converted, so the app won't let you use them. The game has almost no text: the US version plays the same in any language. The app doesn't download or distribute ROMs.
With the game closed
Enabling the connection, installing or removing the texture pack and uninstalling the runtime are done with the game closed.
Only during the race
Effects that arrive on the title screen, in menus or between races wait in a queue and fire when the next one starts (for up to 10 minutes).
The rivals are the CPU
«Against the rivals» effects hit the drivers the game controls. In a mode without CPU drivers there's no one for them to affect.

FAQ
No. OverInteractive doesn't distribute ROMs: you bring your own copy. The game uses it only once to build its files and doesn't need it after that.
Effects only apply while a race is running. Anything that arrives earlier waits in a queue and fires as soon as the next race starts.
Yes: in the game's «Settings» tab, «High-definition textures» offers MK64 Reloaded HD, the whole game in high resolution, faithful to the original (about 440 MB). It installs with the game closed; to stop using it, press «Remove».
That version doesn't work, and the «Choose ROM» step turns red with the reason. It's almost always the European or Japanese version, a romhack or a compressed file. Use the original, unmodified US one.
In the ⋯ menu of the bar below, «Uninstall runtime». The runtime, the generated files and the packs are deleted, but your saved data is kept unless you tick «Also delete saved games». Your ROM is not touched.
