Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time: setup and first playthrough

What the app does for you, what you need to bring and what each game asks the first time you open it.

Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time aren't installed from Steam: they run on a runtime the app downloads and use your own ROM. Setup happens only once and is almost fully automatic, but on first launch each game needs a couple of steps inside its own window. Here they all are, in the order they appear.

Everything it can do

  • Each game's runtime downloads from the app in one click, with no separate installers.
  • Accepts .z64, .n64 and .v64 ROMs: the app detects the format and never changes your file.
  • The connection with OverInteractive is turned on from the same setup window.
  • Works on a freshly installed Windows: everything the game needs to open is included.
  • The first time, the app shows you what you'll see in the game window before opening it.
  • Effects that arrive during cutscenes, dialogs, menus or pause wait in a queue and play on their own.

Before you start

You need OverInteractive on Windows 10 or 11, an internet connection to download the runtime and your copy of the game as a ROM. OverInteractive doesn't distribute ROMs.

  • Super Mario 64: the US or the Japanese version.
  • Ocarina of Time: your N64 ROM of the game (the North American 1.2 version works).
  • Your ROM stays untouched: the app works with a copy.

Setting up the game in the app

Open the game from the Games section. The game bar shows three steps that turn green as you complete them; you also have them all together under the ⋯ menu → Game setup.

  • Download runtime: it's downloaded only once.
  • Choose ROM: pick your file from Windows Explorer.
  • Enable connection: with the game closed, gets the game ready to receive effects.

Super Mario 64 first launch

Press Launch game. The first time, the app shows you these steps before opening it:

  • Wait a few seconds: the game reads your ROM and builds its files. It doesn't ask anything; don't close the window.
  • On the title screen, with Mario's face, press Start (Space on the keyboard).
  • Pick MARIO A with the A button (X on the keyboard). On a new file you'll see Peach's letter and Lakitu: press A to skip through the text.
  • Once you control Mario in front of the castle, your audience's effects land instantly.

Ocarina of Time first launch

Press Launch game. This game asks you two questions in its window; the app reminds you of them before opening it:

  • "No O2R Files — Generate one now?": click Yes to build the game files from your ROM.
  • "ROM Extraction" appears with a progress bar. It takes about a minute; don't close the window.
  • "Archive for current ROM, oot.o2r, already exists. Extract again?": click No. The files are ready.
  • On the title screen press Start (Space), pick an empty slot, type a name and confirm with END. Effects land once you control Link.

Keyboard controls

If you play without a controller, these are the default controls in both games. F1 opens the game menu, where you can change them.

  • X: A button · C: B button · Z: Z trigger
  • Space: Start
  • W A S D: analog stick
  • Arrow keys: C buttons

Step by step

  1. Install OverInteractive and open Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time from the Games section.
  2. Press Download runtime and wait for it to finish.
  3. Press Choose ROM and select your copy of the game.
  4. With the game closed, press Enable connection.
  5. Press Launch game and follow the first-launch steps the app shows you.
  6. Once you control the character, try a command from your profile: it should show up instantly.

FAQ

Does the app include the game or the ROM?

No. OverInteractive doesn't distribute either game or their ROMs. You have to bring your own copy; the runtime uses it the first time to build its files.

Do I have to do this every time I play?

No. The files are built only once; from the second time on the game opens straight to the title screen.

I clicked No by mistake in Ocarina of Time

If you answered No to "Generate one now?", the game didn't build its files: close it and press Launch game again, and the question comes back. If you answered Yes to "Extract again?", it just repeats the extraction: wait for it to finish.

I send something from my profile and nothing happens

Check whether you're in a cutscene, a dialog, a menu or paused: at those moments effects wait in a queue and play once you control the character again. If the game bar doesn't show the connection as active, close the game, enable the connection and open it again.

Can I use a controller?

Yes. You can set it up or change the keys from the game menu (F1).
